Golf Training Program That Works

Posted by admin On June - 18 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Are you hooked to the game of golf? Are you on the look out for ways by which you can raise the level of your game? If your answers to these questions are yes, you need a golf training routine that can help you become a great golfer. Golf is an engaging and uniquely amazing game. If you play golf, you practically play against yourself. Every game is a chance for you to prove to yourself that you have improved from the last time you played it.

There are various ways of mapping out an effective golf training program for yourself. The design of each program may differ from one golfer to the other, depending on the particular need of each one. You may work alone or seek the help of a trainer to finalize an effective golf training program for you.

It is important to begin by seeing what you hope to achieve from a golf training program. For instance, your interest might be on improving your swing. Or you might want consistency in finishing games with low scores. Or you might be interested in preparing yourself for competitions. Or you might simply want to play better than the last time you played with your sons. Whatever your reasons, they will help you determine what kind of golf training program can effectively respond to your needs.

A particular golf training program can be devised for practically everybody. Your concern will be to choose one program that can give you maximum benefit. And for a golf training program to be truly effective, you will need to totally commit yourself to it. This does not mean you need to practice and play rounds of golf everyday. This means working not only on your game, but on developing and sustaining other aspects of your life as well, like your health, mental conditioning and diet.

An important part of an effective golf training program is promoting health. It includes nutritional prescriptions and physical fitness components like cardiovascular exercises and stretching. You need overall fitness and stamina to go through the entire training program. You may decide on further enhancing your diet program, or give up on some unhealthy habits, like smoking. The key is to ensure that you have what it takes to improve your game.

Mental conditioning is the other key aspect that needs to be properly addressed when you plan for an effective golf training program. Mental stress can adversely affect your game. On the other hand, you are likely to play better games if you feel relaxed. It will therefore help if your training program allows you enough time to manage the causes of stress in your daily life and feel better every time you play a round of golf.

Golf Course – A Walking Play Board

Are you preparing to play a round of golf at your local public golf course? Before you start beginners have many questions. Here are answers to those commonly asked questions.

Checklist of golf terms:

What is a golf course?

The golf course is a well manicured lawn on which players hit a small ball with a golf club and attempt to land the ball into a small hole located many yards from the starting point. Unlike other sports where the player is concerned about how to react to a moving ball; it is the golfer who hits the golf ball into motion.

Become familiar with the golf course you will be playing. Arrive early and walk the golf course. Become familiar with the markings and get a feel and sense about the course. Feel the sloping, see the bumps in the green, and anything and everything that will help you score better.

Golf courses will have nine or eighteen holes. The yardage distances between the holes will vary. Hole number nineteen is the clubhouse which houses the golf shop, restaurant, bar, and other golf players interests.

What does it mean to play a round of golf?

The golf course is designed in a circular pattern. You check in at the club house where your tee is located and you will play nine or eighteen holes walking and playing in a large circle or round. The last hole is near the club house (yes, this is where you started) and stop for refreshments and engage in golf stories, jokes and share social time with other golfers.

What is a tee?

The tee or tee peg is the starting point where the initial stroke begins. You hit the golf ball sending it down the fairway to have the ball fall into the hole located on the green.

Why is there a flag in the golf hole?

The flag marks the hole and offers you an aiming guide. If there are different colors of flags check on the definitions of the colors at your course as these flags indicate the hole positioning as to where you want to land the ball.

What is the fairway, the green and the rough?

The fairway can be considered as the largest playing area. The grass is well manicured and allows a clearly marked direction where you want the ball to travel. The golf ball will travel through the fairway and land in the the green. Fairway lengths vary from hole to hole. I think of the fairway as a highway.

The green is an extremely well manicured area surrounding the hole. The hole is the end target of a golf swing. I think of the green as being the parking lot for my golf ball.

If you hit the ball into the rough; you are in trouble. The rough is high grass which is on either side of the fairway and is designed as a penalty for missing the fairway. The penalty is the challenges you face to get the ball into the fairway. I think of the rough as being that area on either side of the highway which is not paved and the golf ball is stuck in the weeds.

What are bunkers and hazards?

Avoid bunkers. These are sand pits located at different sites of the golf course. Hazards are ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water including the ocean. These water areas are usually marked with red stakes. Obviously, the golf ball is very difficult to retrieve during the game and you are penalized one point.

What is out-of-bounds area?

It is an area that is not part of the golf course. If the golf course is next to a residential area you cannot play the game from the backyard of a neighbor or from their flower or vegetable garden.

Why the graveled path?

The graveled pathway is for the golf carts. These paths are narrow, extend good driving courtesies. Most golf courses do not want you traveling on the grass; they prefer you walk.

Correcting a Golf Slice Made Simple!

Correcting a golf slice is one of the quickest ways you can improve your golf game. It is by far the most common problem suffered by golfers throughout the world.

A lot of golfers suffer for years with frustration because they never take the time to understand why they slice the golf ball. Correcting a golf slice is absolutely essential if you wish to better your golf and get longer lasting enjoyment out of the game. I have outlined here some simple, straight forward tips to help cure your slice just by working on some basic golf swing fundamentals.

Correct Golf Stance

The ideal golf stance should be about the width of your shoulders. Your shoulders need to be parallel to your target line. Your feet should be parallel to your target line as well and ideally be pointing at a slight angle at address. Your arms should hang naturally, knees slightly bent and your back straight and not hunched over.

Practice this proper golf stance in the mirror until you get it right. Even slight changes to your stance can have major effects on the outcome of your golf shots. The main thing is, it should be as comfortable as possible.

Correct Golf Grip

Making slight adjustments in your golf grip can help greatly in correcting a golf slice. Grip the golf club first with your left hand with your thumb resting along the shaft. There should be a line between your index finger and your thumb and this should be aiming roughly at your right eye.

Interlock your small finger on your right hand inside the index finger on your left hand. The right hand wraps itself over the left and the left thumb rests into your right palm. A lot of golfers grip the club way too tight causing the right hand to take over the swing resulting in a hooked golf shot. But, with a golf slice most golfers have a weak grip which creates an open club face resulting in the golf ball slicing out to the right.

The easiest way of correcting a golf slice caused by your grip is to adjust your hands to strengthen the grip (right hander). Roll your left and right hand slightly to the right and further underneath the grip. This will help ensure the club face rolls over and squares up better at impact. Practice this at your local driving range to determine if it is the golf grip that’s causing your golf slice.

Take it slow and make only minor adjustments until you find you’re getting some results. It may seem simple and even obvious, but fixing your golf grip is one of the best ways of correcting a golf slice.

Proper Golf Swing Mechanics

Practicing the correct golf swing mechanics is another cure for correcting a golf slice. A correctly performed backswing begins with your hands, arms and shoulders taking the club away in one piece. This should be a smooth action right from the start to the finish of the golf swing.

The Downswing starts with your arms bringing the golf club down and through to the impact zone. The legs come through together with your arms, eyes on the golf ball and ensuring your body stays behind the golf ball right through and past the impact zone. With the right golf swing mechanics, any golfer can improve their golf score almost overnight!

Practicing the basics of a good golf swing and playing regularly are essential in your quest to becoming a great golfer. Develop good habits into your golf game and make small changes where necessary as they can make a huge difference in your overall score. Keep practicing correcting a golf slice and you’ll be taking giant steps toward playing some great golf.
